Buffalo, NY-The Marist College women's softball team split its doubleheader with conference rival Canisius, winning the first game 2-0, while losing the nightcap, 4-3, this afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex. The Red Foxes are now 5-9 in league action and 8-31 overall. The Golden Griffs are now 5-9 in the conference and 14-30 on the season.
Amanda Luukinen was 2-for-2 with an RBI double in the second game, and Jamie Gorczynski was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a triple. Becki Murphy, Mary Burke and Courtney Piar also collected hits in game two. Piar pitched all seven innings, allowing four hits and three runs, while striking out five batters.
Bobbi Jo Gonnello (Clifton, NJ) went 2-for-3 with a home run to lead Marist, while Chrystine McHugh (Port Ewen, NY) and Kara Lacey (Cheshire, Conn.) had singles for the Red Foxes. Elizabeth Moyer (Scio, NY) suffered the loss on the mound after giving up three runs and four hits in three innings of work.
With Marist trailing 4-2, Gonnello led off the seventh with a single, Lacey stroked a one-out single and Piar walked Bridget Hurlman (Yonkers, NY) to load the bases. Piar got Katie Eskin (Edison, NJ) on a ground out to short and Allison Bartley (Manalapan, NJ) on a groundout to second to salvage the win.
Down 1-0, Burke ignited a two-out rally with a single in the second. Piar followed with a single, and Luukinen drove in a run with a double. Gorczynski scored two more with a triple to give the Golden Griffins a 3-1 lead. Luukinen singled and scored on a wild pitch in the fifth frame to extend the cushion to 4-1.
Nicole Fox (Temecula, CA) pitched five shutout innings, allowing four hits, and Danielle Blake (Doylestown, PA) tossed two innings to pick up the save and give Marist the win. Kathleen McEvily (White Plains, NY) and Gonnello had the Red Foxes' two hits as Canisius pitcher Andrea Bunten went the distance and gave up one earned run.
Luukinen was 1-for-2 from the plate, while Murphy, Bunten and Ashley Gonnello each went 1-for-3.
Bryanne Thitchener (Poughkeepsie, NY) walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored after a McEvily single to center field and a Canisius throwing error to give Marist a 1-0 lead. Tara Delmour (River Edge, NJ) scored on a passed ball in the sixth for the final 2-0 margin.
The Red Foxes return to action Saturday, May 3rd, when they take on Niagara University in a conference doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
