Women's Lacrosse Inks Eight in Early Signing Period

Poughkeepsie, NY - Marist women's lacrosse Head Coach Noelle Cebron is proud to announce the signing of eight student-athletes to national letters-of-intent during the early signing period. The class of 2009 will include students from four different states including Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York.

Coach Cebron said, "I am very excited about the quality of this year's recruiting class. There was a lot of interest in Marist this year and I was able to focus on the best student-athletes and find those who would fit in well with our system. There is a lot of talent in this year's class and I look forward to working with them as we strive to take Marist lacrosse to the next level."

Among the signees: Defenders: Jessica Viamari, Nicole Goge, Caitlin Schuh, Ashley Dattellas; Midfielder: Carolyn Sumcizk; Attacks: Alexandra "Peak" Rainey, Megan Frey, Stephanie Garland.

Jessica "Jesse" Viamari, Defender, Longmeadow, MA, Longmeadow High School, Mass Elite/Indoor Action Sports Select

Jesse Viamari comes to Marist from 2004 Massachusetts State Champions, Longmeadow High School, where she played for Coach Cathy Parker. Following their State Championship season, her Longmeadow team was ranked 15th in the nation by US Lacrosse Magazine. Additionally, her team has won the Western Massachusetts Championship in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Her team was runner up in the State Championships in 2003 and 2003, and ranked second in Massachusetts Division I. As a junior, she was named First Team All-Western Massachusetts and First Team All-League. She also played club lacrosse with Mass Elite/Indoor Action Sports Select (team captain) for Coach Jeff Coulson and was on the Schoolgirls Lower New England National Team 1. She was selected to represent the Western Massachusetts Under-15 All-Star Team at the 2001 US Lacrosse Youth Festival. Viamari was a recipient of the 2004 Massachusetts Student-Athletic Citizenship Award in 2004. She also played field hockey and her team was Western Massachusetts Champions in 2002, 2003, 2004 and participated in the state tournament those same years. She was named First Team All-Western Massachusetts and First Team All-League this fall and was a member of the Massachusetts Super 60 All-Star team, for the top 60 players in the state. She is the daughter of Robert and Judy Viamari and has two brothers, Jeffrey a junior at Union College and captain of the baseball team, and Jonathan, a sophomore at Marist.

Coach Cebron on Viamari: "Jesse is a solid, strong and athletic defender who will make an immediate impact on our team after a standout career with her high school and schoolgirls teams. She is a perfect fit for the Marist family and fits our program's style of play `to a tee'."

Nicole Goge, Defender, Westminster, MD, Winters Mill High School, Frederick Stars

A Maryland native, Nicole Goge is a very successful high school player who comes to Marist after playing for Coach Courtney Vaughn at Winters Mill High. During high school, Goge was named Second Team All-Galaxy League, All-MVAL Conference and an Academic All-American. In addition, she played for the Schoolgirls Mid-Atlantic National Team and for Coach Steve Heine with the Frederick Stars. She was also a standout soccer player, garnering First and Second Team All-County, Second Team All-Baltimore Sun and All-MVAL Conference honors. She also competed in track and field, and was First Team All-County, First Team All-Conference and fourth place in the state in the 3200 M relay along with third place All-County in the 1600 M relay. She earned a 4.0 grade point average and was on the honor roll all four years as well as being named a Maryland Distinguished Scholar and a member of the National Honor Society. Her parents are James and Julia Goge and she has one brother, Alex.

Coach Cebron on Goge: "Nicole plays with a lot of heart and intensity and has the ability to make an instant impact as a newcomer. A utility player, she will be excellent for team transition and will see time at both ends of the field."

Caitlin Schuh, Defender, Columbia, MD, Seton Keough High School, CC Lax

Caitlin Schuh brings a wealth of winning experience to Marist, coming from the number 17 high school team in the country at Seton Keough where she plays for Coach Tierney Ahearn. During her career, Seton Keough was Independent Athletic Association of Maryland `B' Conference Champions and earned a 14-4-2 record last spring. She also played club lacrosse for Coach Ralph Walker and CC Lax, an excellent program for which Marist freshman Maureen Boucher also played. Academically, Schuh has earned National Merit Scholarship Honorable Mention and Maryland Distinguished Scholar Honorable Mention, along with being on the Gold and Silver Honor Roll at Seton Keough and is a member of the National Honor Society. She has been on the varsity swim team for four years and is a captain this season, has run varsity cross country for two years and played club soccer for nine years. Her parents are Jim and Kelley Schuh, who played lacrosse and field hockey at Towson University, and she has one brother, Eric, 14.

Coach Cebron on Schuh: "A 5'10" defender, Caitlin will use her height and speed to her advantage. She is a smart and athletic player who comes from an excellent lacrosse background at Seton Keough."

Alexandra "Peak" Rainey, Attack, Columbia, MD, Hammond High School, M&D 2005 Red (Galaxy Lacrosse League)

One of three signees from Maryland, Peak Rainey is a 5'9", left-handed attack whose skill and physical presence will be looked at to impact the Marist offense. Rainey played for Coach Emily Petrlik at Hammond High School and received the Coaches' Award in 2003, was the Most Valuable Attack Player in 2004, and was Second Team All-County last season after recording 36 goals and 15 assists. She also was a member of M&D 2005 Red, playing for Coach Laura Tittsworth in the Galaxy Lacrosse League. With M&D Red, Rainey played in a variety of tournaments including: National Draw Tournament (Medford, NJ 2004), All Star Express Tournament (Annapolis, MD 2004), Galaxy League Tournament (Lehigh University 2004), Metro Summer League (Owings Mills, MD 2004). She participated in the Top-200 camp at the University of Maryland this past summer. Rainey was also a member of the varsity field hockey team at Hammond. She is the daughter of Deborah Barnett and has an older brother who attends Colorado University.

Coach Cebron on Rainey: "We are very excited about adding Peak to our program - she is a crafty lefty who will add size to our offense."

Carolyn Sumcizk, Defense/Mid, Syosset, NY, Syosset High School, Long Island Yellow Jackets

Carolyn Sumcizk has been a standout defender for Head Coach Lisa Christiansen at Syosset High School for four years. During her career, she was named Honorable Mention All Nassau County as a sophomore and First Team All Nassau County as a junior. She earned All-Galaxy Honorable Mention as a sophomore as well. As a junior, she has 35 goals and 18 assists for Syosset. Sumcizk also played club lacrosse for Coaches Carol Rose and Tracy Weiner with the Long Island Yellow Jackets. She was also a member of the Schoolgirls New York National Team 2 and won a silver medal while representing Long Island at the Empire State Games. In addition to lacrosse, Sumcizk also played soccer for which she earned All-Class, All-Conference and Team MVP honors and basketball in which she was All-Division and a Coaches' Award recipient. She is a member of the Spanish Honor Society, the Honor Society, has been named to the honor roll and was named a Scholar Athlete for all three years of high school so far. Her parents are Christine and Jeffrey Sumcizk and she has three siblings, Kimberly and Stephanie, 15 and Jeffrey, 12.

Coach Cebron on Sumcizk: "Carolyn is a vocal, sparkplug defensive player whose quickness out of the backfield will help her contribute offensively and defensively."

Megan Frey, Attack, Pearl River, NY, Nanuet High School, Empire Girls Lacrosse

Megan Frey joins Marist after having played for New York State Final Four contender, Nanuet High School. Her Nanuet team won the Section and Regional Championships her freshman and sophomore years and the New York State Team Sportsmanship Award her junior season As a junior, Frey earned All-Section, All-League and Honorable Mention All-County honors along with the Scholar-Athlete Award. She has been a starter since her freshman year, and as a junior, added 46 goals and 12 assists, bringing her career total to 112 goals, 51 assists. Outside of high school, Frey played for Coach John Callanan and Empire Girls Lacrosse and represented the Hudson Valley in the 2004 Empire State Games. She will serve as team captain this spring and has been named to the Nanuet Honor Roll every quarter of her high school career. Frey coaches youth lacrosse in the spring and summer and held a sports clinic for local girls as part of her Girl Scout Golf Award project. She had the lead in the spring musical as a junior, is a member of the Select Choir, and is a three-time All-State musician. She lives with her parents, Debra and Lawrence Frey, and her sister Hannah, a freshman in high school.

Coach Cebron on Frey: "Megan is a poised player with a nose for the back of the cage whose intensity and creativity will help orchestrate the offense. She has a awesome singing voice and will join the Marist Singers as well."

Stephanie Garland, Attack, West Morris Central High School, STEPS Elite

Stephanie Garland comes to Marist from West Morris Central High School where she has played since her freshman year for Head Coach Robert Herman. In addition, she played for Coach Mike Walsh on the STEPS Elite Club team. She helped lead her STEPS team to a third place finish in the National Draw Tournament and a Lax by the Sea Tournament Championship. Garland is an honor roll student at West Morris as well. Her parents are Glenn and Elizabeth Garland and she has two younger brothers, Stephen, 14 and Spencer, 8.

Coach Cebron on Garland: "Stephanie is extremely quick around the cage and will bring potent offensive skills to the program."

Ashley Dattellas, Defense, Camillus, NY, West Genesee Senior High School, Wildcats

Ashley Dattellas comes to Marist after playing for three-time New York State Champions West Genesee High School under Coach Bob Elmer. Her team, 16-4, was ranked 37th in the nation at the close of the 2004 campaign. She also played club lacrosse for Coach Elmer with the Wildcats. In addition to lacrosse, she is a part of the soccer and basketball team, having served as captain of both junior varsity lacrosse program and currently as captain of the varsity basketball squad. In addition to her success on the field, Dattellas is a member of the National Honor Society and has earned a place on the High Honor Roll 10 out of 12 marking periods and the Honor Roll during the other two. She is a scholar athlete and earned a perfect score on the Course III State Math Exam. She has three sisters: Stephanie, 14, Gabrielle, 12 and Kara, 10 and one brother, Anthony, 2 and her parents are Carl and Christine Dattellas.

Coach Cebron on Dattellas: "Ashley comes from a highly successful high school program and is a solid defender who is willing to work hard to succeed at the Division I level."

The Red Foxes will open their 2005 season at Villanova on March 5 at 1:00 p.m.
