Softball Splits Doubleheader With Manhattan

April 17, 2004

Box Score

Poughkeepsie, NY- A two-run first inning was all Marist needed to defeat Manhattan 2-1 in game one before dropping the back-end of the doubleheader 2-1 to the Jaspers. The Red Foxes move to 7-29 overall and 2-4 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) while the Jaspers improve to 4-21 and 2-2 in the MAAC.

In game one, the Red Foxes' offense came alive early as catcher Jasmery Polanco roped a double to center scoring Nicole Sciacca and Chrystine McHugh. Senior hurler Liz Moyer (7-14) scattered seven hits over seven innings giving up just one Jasper run, while striking out nine batters in her 14th complete game of the season. The lone Jasper run came in the top of the fifth inning as Stef Gozdziewski scored on a Maragaret LaFex sacrifice. Sciacca went 2-for-2 with a run scored. She also swiped her 15th base of the season and has not been caught stealing this season.

After going scoreless for the first three innings of game two, the Jaspers got on the board in the top of the fourth as Kerry Cook scored on a Kiera Fox double to centerfield. Fox then came around to score on an error by Sciacca to make the score 2-0. The Red Foxes answered with a run of their own as McHugh opened the inning with a single to center and came around to score as Barb Leasure doubled to left center. With two outs, Leasure advanced to third on a single by Bridget Hurlman but was stranded as Christine Jakobsen lined to second base to end the rally.

Danielle Blake went five innings, scattering four hits with a strike out. Moyer pitched two innings in relief giving up two hits while striking out one batter.

The Red Foxes are back in action tomorrow as they host Saint Peter's at 1:00pm on Senior Day. A ceremony honoring the two graduating Red Foxes will be held between games one and two.
