Loudonville, NY-The Marist College water polo team had a huge afternoon picking up an 8-7 over conference rival Siena and a 9-7 win over Utica. The Red Foxes improve to 3-14 overall and 1-3 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
In their first MAAC win of the season, it took a solid team effort to defeat Siena. The two teams traded goals over the first quarter, but the Saints began to pull away with a 6-3 lead. Junior Carolyn Rosler made the score 6-4 15 seconds into the third quarter and cut the lead to 6-5 at the 3:17 mark. Rosler's two goals were the first of Marist's six unanswered goals in the last two quarters. The Red Foxes took a 7-6 lead at the 6:11 mark of the fourth quarter on a goal by Alyson Fiorillo as the Red Foxes continued the scoring barrage. Siena did not go away pulling within 8-7 with just over a minute remaining in the game, but the Red Foxes were able to stave off the attack.
Rosler and Fiorillo finished the game with three goals each, while Joelle Evanousky added three assists and freshman Carly Pavlock added two assists. Freshman Jillian Jefferds chipped in with a goal and three steals and Kerin Sovern tallied a goal and a team-high five steals. Goalie Amanda Long made four saves, while Siena keeper Jeanette Ogren made 15 stops.
In the 9-2 victory over Utica, the Red Foxes scored the first six goals of the game and never looked back. Jefferds and Fiorillo led Marist with two goals apiece, while five other Red Foxes each tallied a goal. Long made four saves in net, while Utica's Tracey McConnelee made 10 stops.
The Red Foxes are back in action tomorrow, Sunday, April 4th as they host Siena and Utica in a series of Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) matches at the McCann Natatorium. Marist's first game of the day begins at 10:00am against Utica.
