Softball Opens MAAC Play with Split Against Canisius

April 3, 2004

Box Score

Poughkeepsie, NY- The Marist College women's softball team opened Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play this weekend, splitting a doubleheader with rival Canisius (9-13, 1-1 MAAC) at Gartland Athletic Field. The Red Foxes are now 6-21 overall, 1-1 in the MAAC.

In game one, the Red Foxes edged the Golden Griffins 2-1. Shortstop Caitlin Lever got the Griffs on the board in the third inning, with a double to center that scored Mary Burke. It would prove to be one of the last scoring opportunities for Canisius as Marist hurler Elizabeth Moyer (Scio, NY) would allow only two hits and two base runners the rest of the way.

First baseman Chrystine McHugh (Port Ewen, NY) tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning with one swing of the bat, homering to deep centerfield to open the inning. The homer was McHugh's second of the season. Catcher Jasmery Polanco (Bay Shore, NY) followed with a single down the left field line and would come around to score the go-ahead run on a wild pitch by Griffs' ace Andrea Bunten.

Moyer (6-11) earned the win for the Red Foxes going seven innings, giving up one run on four hits while striking out three and walking two.

Moyer's day was not quite finished as she took the mound for the start in the second game as the Red Foxes fell 1-0. Moyer yielded the game's only run surrendering a solo shot in the top of the fourth inning to first baseman Beth Enk. Moyer threw four innings giving up five hits while striking out three.

After opening the game with a hit, the Marist's bats fell quiet for most of the game scattering three hits. But the Red Foxes would rally in the bottom of the seventh as McHugh, who was 1-for-3 in the game, doubled to start the inning and followed by stealing second. With one out, McHugh was thrown out as she tried to steal third and freshman Lyndsay Ward (Huntington, NY) struck out to end the game.

Danielle Blake (Doylestown, PA) came into pitch three perfect innings of relief striking out three Canisius batters while not allowing a hit. Lindsay Garbacz, Jena Jurich and Courtney Piar combined for the three-hit shutout.

The Red Foxes continue MAAC play tomorrow, Sunday, April 4th at 11:00am as they take on Niagara.
