Fairfield, CT- The Marist College softball team had a very tough day of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC)play this afternoon dropping a doubleheader to Fairfield this afternoon. The Stags won both games by the eight-run rule winning the first game, 11-2, and taking the nightcap 12-0. Win the losses the Red Foxes fall to 10-38 overall, and 4-8 in the MAAC, while Fairfield improves to 24-31 overall and 8-4 in the MAAC.
In the first game, Marist pushed a run across the board in the top of the first inning as Jasmery Polanco stroked a double to right, plating Katie Eskin who singled, and went from first to third on the Polanco hit. Fairfield got the run back in the home half of the first as leadoff hitter Lindsay Walsh stole home on a double steal. Walsh reached on a fielding error by the Marist third baseman for Fairfield's first runner of the game.
From there both pitchers took over, until the top of the sixth inning, when Bridget Hurlman singled to center to score Polanco who had a single. In the bottom of the sixth Fairfield scored 10 runs on five hits capped off by a Diana Fasano two-run homerun. Senior Megan Miller started the rally with a two-RBI single to left centerfield.
In the circle for Marist, Danielle Blake took the loss tossing 5.2 innings, giving up 11 runs (three earned) on eight hits, while the Stags Tracy Sylvestre pitched a six innings, giving up two runs on six hits, and one walk. Sylvestre (13-11) struck out four Red Foxes on the afternoon.
In the nightcap, the Stags bats kept things going as tbey scored 10 runs in the first three innings off freshman Lyndsay Ward. The first three batters walked for the Stags, and Ringnalda stroked a single down the left field line to drive in Walsh and sophomore Tara Hansen. The next hitter for the Stags, sophomore Shannon Logan laced a double to drive in two base runners, and make it 4-0. The Stags added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, and added four more in the third as Hansen smacked her 10th homerun of the season.
Cagney Ringnalda allowed only one hit striking out three in five innings of work for the Stags. She was also helped herself offensively, going 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and a run scored.
Polanco picked up the only hit for Marist in game two and finished the day a combined 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
On the afternoon, Fairfield combined for 20 hits in both games, and scored 23 runs on the day.
The Red Foxes continue MAAC play tomorrow as they travel to Iona for a 1:00pm start.
