Lawrenceville, NJ- The Marist College softball team was swept by Rider 6-0 and 7-4 to close out the 2004 season. The Red Foxes finish the year with an 11-43 mark overall and 4-12 record in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
The Red Foxes could not overcome a late-inning rally by the Broncs dropping the nightcap 7-4. Marist got on the board in the first as Chrystine McHugh scored after the Rider third baseman made an error on Barbara Leasure sacrifice attempt. Leasure would score one batter later on a sacrifice fly by Jasmery Polanco. The Broncs answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 2-1.
The Broncs took the lead in the bottom of the second on a pair of homeruns by Amanda Tu and Nicole Mears off pitcher Elizabeth Moyer to take a 3-2 lead. The Red Foxes tied the game in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI double by Polanco.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Broncs plated four runs in the inning to take a 7-3 lead. With two on and one out, Brandey Weed roped a double to right center chasing home two runs. Jamie Farley added a RBI double one batter later and came around to score on a Kristin Kenavan single.
Moyer (9-20) threw seven innings, giving up the seven runs on 12 hits. Rider ace Heather Beintema (19-5) tossed her second complete game of the day giving up four runs, one earned on six hits while striking out four.
In game one, the Red Foxes scattered just four hits off Beintema, who went the distance for the Broncs striking out 12 Red Foxes. Polanco picked up two of Marist's hits while Lyndsay Ward (Huntington, NY) and Allison Bartley collected the others.
The Broncs had a combined 14 hits off pitchers Danielle Blake (2-16) and Ward. Blake went five innings giving up six runs, five earned on 12 hits, while Ward went one inning giving up two hits while striking out one.
Polanco went a combined 4-for-5 with two runs batted in for the Red Foxes. The catcher finishes the season with a team-high 18 RBI.
Marist College plays host to the 2004 MAAC Softball Championship, which will be held May 14-15 on Gartland Athletic Field.
