ITHACA, N.Y. - Marist's men's tennis squad traveled to Ithaca Friday to take part in the Cornell Fall Invitational and picked up four wins on the first day of action.
Mark Santucci, Brendon Von Wesbeck, Sean Tully and Jeff Nguyen all tasted victory, while Pedro Genovese, Leo Rodriguez, Ray Josephs and Frank Algier fell in their first matches.
Santucci knocked off Matt Cherner-Ranft in the "B" flight 6-3, 6-4 and will next face Ari Beilin of Middlebury College in the bracket.
Von Wesbeck squared off with David Jackson of UMBC in the "C" flight and came out victorious 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-3.
Tully and Nguyen both picked up wins in the "D" flight with Tully finishing off Sho Sato of UConn 6-1, 6-0 and Nguyen topping Nicholas Block of Stony Brook 6-1, 6-3. Nguyen will play Salih Unsal of Middlebury in his next contest.
The Red Foxes didn't fare as well in the "A" flight Rodriguez dropping a hard fought match to Bryan Waldron of Middlebury 6-4, 6-4, while Genovese lost to Nate Edmunds of Middlebury 7-6(5), 6-3.
Josephs was knocked off by Jean-Francois Robitalle of Stony Brook 6-2, 6-1 in the "B" flight, while Algier was dropped by Mark Piro of Binghamton 6-1, 6-1.
Tournament play will continue Saturday.
