Men's Track and Field Opens Season at Ram 10-Way Invitational

Jan. 7, 2005

New York, N.Y. - Senior Steve Hicks placed fourth in the 3000-meter run to pace the Marist men's indoor track team at the indoor season-opening Ram 10-Way Invitational, hosted by Fordham at the New York City Armory. Hicks rebounded from a season-ending leg injury in cross country to finish in a time of 8:52.63.

Senior captain Geoff Decker ran a personal-best time of 4:23.31 in the mile run, good for 10th place. It was Decker's first track race for Marist in nearly two years.

Sophomore Brian DeMarco opened the season strongly in the 500-meter dash with a seventh-place time of 1:05.95. The time was less then three-tenths of a second off his own school record (1:05.74) in that event and it was less than one second off the IC4A qualifying mark in the event (1:05.25).

Sophomore Mike Bamberger ran a personal-best time in the 1,000-meter run, placing seventh in 2:31.13. It was Bamberger's longest race as a collegiate middle distance runner and an excellent college debut performance in the event.

In the 5,000-meter run, freshman Mike Rolek and sophomore Matt Syzmaszek ran to personal-best times in their first collegiate indoor races.

The men's track team returns to action on Friday, January 14, at the NYU Invitational, which will be held at the Armory.
