Feb. 27, 2005

Box Score

Macon, Ga. - The Marist softball team (0-4) dropped a pair of contests at the Comfort Inn Mercer Classic today, falling 6-5 to host Mercer and 6-0 to Siena. In the Mercer game, junior SS Katie Eskin hit her first career home run.

Against the host Bears, the Red Foxes got off to a 4-0 lead with four runs in the top of the second. C Jasmery Polanco led off with a single to right field and 1B Annie Castellano followed with a double. One batter later, RF Lyndsay Ward singled, scoring Polanco. Eskin then stepped to the plate and after a Ward stolen base, swatted a Meredith Weare pitch over the fence for a three-run blast.

Mercer would score twice in the bottom of the inning but the Red Foxes would add another run in the top of the third on Castellano's RBI single that scored CF Allison Bartley.

Ahead 5-3 after 5 ½ innings, Marist would surrender the lead in the bottom of the sixth and lose 6-5. Mercer RF Sarah Harding singled up the middle and SS C.J. Martin scored ahead of the throw for the go-ahead run.

Freshman Megan Rigos (0-2, 10.84 ERA) pitched a complete game and struck out two. Katie Rosentreter pitched four no-hit innings in relief of Weare to earn the win.

In the nightcap against Siena, the Saints roared out of the gate with five runs in the top of the first for an insurmountable lead. RF Christa Fasano stroked a two-run double for the big blow. Eskin and Bartley would manage to get singles against the otherwise unhittable Adrian St. Cin. The game did not count in the MAAC standings.

Marist wraps up play for the weekend tomorrow at 12 p.m. against 2004 NCAA Tournament participant Mississippi Valley State.
