Marist Splits Doubleheader at George Mason

March 22, 2005

Box Score

Fairfax, Va. - Freshman Megan Rigos hurled a three-hit shutout to propel the Marist softball team to a 4-0 win over host George Mason in the first game of a doubleheader today. The Red Foxes dropped the nightcap by the score of 4-3.

Rigos struck out a career-high eight batters and did not allow a walk for her first career shutout and the program's first since blanking St. Peter's 2-0 in the second game of a doubleheader last April 18.

Marist scored all the runs it would need in the top of the second, as 2B Laurissa Riley singled home LF Christine Jakobsen and 3B Chrystine McHugh. The Red Foxes added two insurance runs in the fifth as CF Allison Bartley reached first base on an error by Patriots 3B Emily Grapel and then scored as Grapel misplayed a ball hit by DH Bridget Hurlman. Following a double play, Jakobsen singled to left and was driven in by McHugh's double.

Jakobsen, McHugh, Hurlman and 1B Annie Castellano all collected two base hits. RF Megan Farrell had two of George Mason's three hits. Ashley Straube pitched a complete game and took the loss.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Marist jumped out to leads of 2-0 and 3-2 but could not maintain the advantage and lost 4-3. Freshman Kristen Merlino pitched a complete game, allowing eight hits, walking one and striking out three.

The Red Foxes got off to a great start as RF Lyndsay Ward reached on an error, followed by consecutive doubles off the bats of SS Katie Eskin and Castellano, putting Marist up 2-0. After the Patriots scored in the first and again in the second to tie the game, Marist went ahead again in the third as Bartley socked a two-out triple to center field that brought home Castellano.

CF Katlyn Winter would lead George Mason back, however, tying the game in the bottom of the third on a solo home run and hitting an RBI sacrifice fly in the fifth that scored the eventual winning run.

Castellano went two for three with a run scored and two RBI to pace the Marist offense.

The Red Foxes (3-9) play a doubleheader at George Washington tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
