West Point, N.Y. - The Marist softball team (6-12) won Game 1 of today's doubleheader at Army by the score of 6-3 before falling 3-1 in the nightcap. Junior 3B Chrystine McHugh went two for three with two RBIs on the day to extend her consecutive-game hitting streak to 11.
The Red Foxes got off to a hot start in the opener, scoring twice in the first inning as McHugh drew a leadoff walk and was doubled home by freshman 1B Annie Castellano, the reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week. After a single by junior DP Bridget Hurlman, Castellano would come around to score on an RBI single off the bat of junior SS Katie Eskin.
Army 1B Lisa Huntington hit a two-run single in the bottom of the first to tie it up but Marist would go back ahead in the second on McHugh's RBI sacrifice fly that plated sophomore RF Lyndsay Ward.
After 3B Adrian Wilson's RBI double in the bottom of the third knotted the game at 3-3, the Red Foxes immediately took the lead for good in the fourth as McHugh came through again with an RBI single to bring home senior CF Allison Bartley.
Marist would add two insurance runs, the first of which came in the sixth when freshman LF Pamela de la Llave scored on a throwing error. Bartley added an exclamation point to the victory with a seventh-inning home run, her second of the season.
Castellano, Eskin and de la Llave each had two hits for the Red Foxes. Ward scored her run following her first career triple.
Freshman Megan Rigos earned her fifth win with four shutout innings in relief of starter Kristen Merlino. Rigos scattered four hits and struck out five while Merlino allowed five hits and fanned one. Starter Leigh Harrell took the loss for Army.
The Black Knights (12-14) took the lead quickly in Game 2 when SS Lauren Gobar alertly tagged up and scored on a foul pop up to Castellano by DP Veronica Lauzon. Army added the winning run in the fourth on a Huntington RBI single.
The Red Foxes got on the scoreboard in the fifth when Hurlman singled to left, scoring junior 2B Laurissa Riley. Army added a run in the sixth for the 3-1 final score.
Rigos took the loss while pitching her 10th complete game. She allowed seven hits and walked one. Chris Stauffer scattered two hits in four shutout innings to earn the win. Kelly Trout picked up the save. Castellano was two for four in the game, four for six on the day.
Marist is back in action Sunday, April 3 for a noon doubleheader at Yale.
