Buffalo, N.Y. - The Marist softball team (12-16, 2-2 MAAC) suffered a sweep at the hands of host Canisius today in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. Game scores were 5-1 and 4-1. Junior 3B Chrystine McHugh had three of the team's four hits to extend her consecutive-game hitting streak to 21 games.
The Red Foxes had a chance to take an early lead but Andrea Bunten struck out 1B Annie Castellano with the bases loaded to end the top of the first inning. The Golden Griffins then went ahead 1-0 when LF Jenny Maheu singled home CF Becky Owen with nobody out in the bottom of the first.
Canisius scored the game-winning run in the fourth as 2B Katie Miranto was able to score on an error by Marist catcher Jasmery Polanco. The home team would add three more runs in the sixth as Miranto came up with a two-run single and later scored on a wild pitch.
Bunten was dominant nearly the entire way for the Griffs, letting up only a third-inning single to McHugh and a solo home run by CF Allison Bartley with one out in the seventh, her third of the season. She struck out 13, a season high by a Marist opponent. Freshman Megan Rigos (9-10) allowed five runs, three earned in six innings on five hits and a walk. Rigos had five strikeouts.
The nightcap saw more outstanding pitching from Canisius as Jess Stackhouse tossed a complete game two-hitter with three strikeouts, giving up just one unearned run. Freshman Kristen Merlino (3-5) allowed four runs on six hits and two walks with a strikeout in six innings.
The Red Foxes took a 1-0 lead when RF Lyndsay Ward hit a grounder back to Stackhouse, who threw the ball away for an error as Bartley scored all the way from first base.
Canisius (10-10, 3-1 MAAC) tied the game in the third when Owen scored on a Merlino wild pitch and put the Red Foxes away in the fourth inning on 3B Amanda Luukinen's inside-the-park three-run homer.
McHugh led off the game with a single to left field, extending her streak to 21 games, and singled again in the sixth for the Red and White's only other base hit.
The Red Foxes are back in action tomorrow with a MAAC doubleheader at Niagara. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
