Staten Island, N.Y. - The Marist water polo team (12-17, 4-4 MAAC) split two conference matches at Wagner today, beating Siena 7-5 before losing a close 6-5 decision to Villanova. Freshman driver Allison Rader had four goals on the day while classmate Elizabeth Davis scored her first career goal on a full-pool heave at the buzzer in the loss to Villanova.
Rader led a balanced Red Foxes attack in the victory over Siena with three goals and an assist. Sophomore 2MD Jillian Jefferds, sophomore 2M Katie Swanson, freshman driver Callie Andrysiak and junior utility Amanda Long scored the other goals while junior driver Abigail Hatcher, senior 2M Ashley Woerner and senior utility Susan Grant had assists. Davis made three saves in the first half while freshman Katy Zweifel played the second half and made two saves. Shanna Allen and Caitlin Smith each had two goals and an assist for Siena while Kaedy Graves had seven saves in the Saints net.
Against Villanova, five different Marist players tallied goals, including Davis, who made four saves during her half in goal. Jefferds, Rader, Swanson and sophomore driver Mary Grisey scored while Rader added an assist. Zweifel had five saves. Kim Pare had three goals and Ellen Howe two assists for the Wildcats, while Jess Wells recorded five saves.
Marist wraps up the regular season tomorrow at St. Francis (N.Y.), taking on the host Terriers at 10 a.m. before facing off with Iona at 2:30 p.m. The Red Foxes can clinch a berth in the MAAC Championships with a win in either match. The conference tournament, featuring the top four teams from the regular season, will be held next Friday and Saturday at the McCann Center Natatorium.
