Red Foxes Split With Fairfield

May. 1, 2005

Box Score

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - The Marist softball team (21-18, 7-3 MAAC) picked up a split in a conference doubleheader against visiting Fairfield today at Gartland Field. Freshman pitcher Megan Rigos hurled a two-hit shutout as the Red Foxes took the opener 4-0. The Stags came away with a 4-2 win in the nightcap. Junior 3B Chrystine McHugh homered in both games of the doubleheader.

The Red Foxes jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in Game 1 thanks to RBI singles from junior C Jasmery Polanco and freshman 1B Annie Castellano. Marist added an insurance run in the bottom of the third when McHugh led off with a blast over the left-center field wall for her third home run of the season.

A fourth run for Marist would score in the sixth as pinch runner Laurissa Riley came home when Fairfield 3B Natalie Visone failed to cleanly field a pickoff throw from catcher Shannon Logan.

Rigos (17-12, 2.29 ERA) was brilliant throughout, tossing four and a third perfect innings to start the game before pitcher Cagney Ringnalda singled with one out in the top of the fifth. Following that hit, a Visone infield single later in the inning was all the offense the Stags would muster. Rigos walked none and struck out eight to earn her second career shutout. Starter Tracy Sylvestre took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks in two-plus innings. Ringnalda kept the Stags in the game by allowing just one unearned run on one hit with five strikeouts in the last four-plus frames.

Polanco had two hits for Marist, including her 13th double of the season, which tied her for second on the Marist single-season list in that category.

Fairfield struck quickly in the second game as pitcher Tara Hansen led off the first with a double down the left field line and later scored from third on a suicide squeeze bunt by Logan.

McHugh would immediately tie the game 1-1, leading off the home half of the first with her second homer of the day and fourth of the year. Hansen was nearly lights-out from that point on, however, holding Marist hitless until the bottom of the sixth.

The Stags (29-22, 9-3 MAAC) scored three times with two out in the top of the second, getting a two-run single from Hansen and an RBI double from CF Julia Jacoby, to take a 4-1 advantage.

The Red Foxes mounted a comeback attempt in the sixth as McHugh led off with a single to left field and scored one batter later on an RBI double off the bat of junior DP Bridget Hurlman, her team-leading 28th of the year. That was all Marist would get, however, as Hansen retired the final five batters of the game to earn her 11th win. She allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while fanning two. Merlino (4-6, 3.82 ERA) surrendered four runs on four hits and a walk in two innings to take the loss. She struck out one. Rigos pitched the final five innings and shut Fairfield out on two hits with two strikeouts.

The Red Foxes are scheduled to host Hartford in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
