ALBANY, N.Y.- The Marist Men's Soccer team ended its four game losing streak with a 3-3 tie at Albany on Wednesday afternoon. Kyle Nunes (Ossining, N.Y.) tallied his first goal of the season, while Keith Detelj (Sayville, N.Y.) and Bobby Van Dyke (Annapolis, Md.) knocked in their third and second goals, respectively.
Nunes got the scoring underway for the Red Foxes in the 16th minute when he blasted a pass from Anthony Graci (Kings Park, N.Y.) out of the reach of Albany keeper Steward Ceus for a 1-0 lead. Marist held the one goal advantage until Brad Ray beat Marist keeper Daniel Owens (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) from just 10 yards out.
Marist regained a one-goal advantage when Detelj beat Ceus from 10 yards out on a cross from 10 yards away from the goalmouth. Detelj's third tally of the season off of Graci's second helper of the day gave Marist a 2-1 lead in the 62nd minute.
The lead was short lived however as Albany came back to score two times in the next 25 minutes to take a 3-2 lead late in the game. Alex Ruhe-Lischke knotted the score at 2-2 just five minutes after Detelj's goal. At 85:38 Albany scored what looked liked the game winner when Trevor Elmo headed a cross from Erik DiLorenzo past Owens for the one goal lead.
Marist would not give in though, and with just over two minutes remaining Van Dyke found the back of the net from just inside the 18-yard box to tie the score. Detelj capped off a three-point day with the assist on Van Dyke's equalizer. With the score still tied at 3-3 at the end of regulation the teams played scoreless for two 10:00 overtime periods.
Marist held a sound advantage in shots during the match getting off 23. Eleven of those were on net, forcing Ceus to make eight saves in the match. The Great Danes got off 14 for the match, getting nine on goal. Owens, in his first career start for the Red Foxes played the entire 110:00 minutes and made six saves in his debut.
With the tie Marist moves to 1-5-1 heading into its final non-conference match of the season at Philadelphia University on Saturday. Kick-off in the City of Brotherly Love is scheduled for 2:30.
