The Marist women's soccer team lost a hard-fought battle to the Black Knights of Army in a physical game this evening by a score of 3-0. Marist was in control for most of the first half, maintaining the flow of the contest. The game was more even-sided in the second half, with Army able to capitalize for two goals. The Red Foxes mounted several powerful attacks, but Rebecca Garcia was solid in goal for the Knights.
Marist took control of the game from the opening whistle, keeping the ball away from its defensive end. The Red Foxes had two shots on goal in the first half including one by Justine Caccamo (Bohemia, N.Y.) that was saved at close range. Keri Koegel (Merrick, N.Y.) fired a rocket from far out, but Garcia snagged it in mid-air. Army turned up the offense late in the half to bring its tally to 10 for the segment. With just under three minutes remaining in the half, Molly Byrnes split the defense and headed the ball into the wide right corner. Army took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Army came out strong in the second half, mounting an unrelenting attack. The Red Foxes' midfield managed to make some solid breaks for the offense, but Garcia was again solid in the net. After stopping a tough one-on-one situation, rookie goalkeeper Caitlin Nazarechuk (Ringwood, N.J.) kept her head in the game and made a huge stop on a close range free kick. She made five big saves in the second half despite a barrage of shots from Army. Delaney Brown ripped a hard shot from 25-yards out, beating Nazarechuk on the right side.
Following Army's second goal, Marist came out with firing determination. Caccamo had two big shots on goal but was unable to convert for the point. Freshman midfielder Haley Hart (Scottsdale, Ariz.) led a Marist breakaway and fired a bullet at the goal that ricocheted off the crossbar, just missing the net. Following that offensive burst by the Foxes, Army continued to pressure the Marist defense, totaling 18 shots on the half. The Red Foxes pushed the tempo offensively in the closing minutes, but were unable to find the back of the net. At 87:18, the Black Knights sealed the win with a header by Sarah Domme.
Caccamo led the Marist attack with three shots, all on goal. It was another team effort, with all of Marist's field players seeing action in the game. Nazarechuk played her first career complete game, tallying six saves in goal.
Marist returns to action tomorrow when it heads to Hofstra for a 5:00 p.m. tilt with the Lady Pride.
