Foxes Fall To #10 UCSB, Santa Clara

March 11, 2006

SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. - The Marist Women's Water Polo squad dropped two games on Saturday, the first to #10 University of California Santa Barbara 10-4 and the second to Santa Clara 9-3. Katelin McCahill (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) led the Red Foxes with four goals over the two games.

The Foxes opened the scoring in the UCSB tilt and held a 2-0 and 3-1 lead in the first quarter. Following the opening frame Marist held a 3-2 advantage, before the Gauchos came back and outscored the Foxes 3-0 in the second, to take a 5-3 lead into the half. In the second half, the Red Foxes could not find the scoring touch they had early on, as the Gauchos allowed only one goal. They equaled their first half total with five in the second to earn the six goal victory, 10-4. McCahill again led the way for Marist as she scored three of the four goals in the game. McCahill also drew two ejections against the Gauchos. Junior captain Jillian Jefferds (Naperville, Ill.) added the fourth goal and picked up a steal for the Foxes. In goal sophomore Katy Zweifel (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) made six saves in the first half, while classmate Elizabeth Davis (Albuquerque, N.M.) made four stops for Marist in the second half.

In game two against Santa Clara, the Foxes could not get into an offensive grove. They could manage just three goals; one apiece from McCahill, Kari Weston (Chino Hills, Calif.) and Kristina Nickle (Lake Worth, Fla.). Weston added three steals and two assists for the game. Marist hurt itself by giving the Broncos 10 chances with the six-on-five advantage, and Santa Clara was able to tally on three of those opportunities. Davis got the start in game two in the cage and stopped four shots in the first half. Zweifel relieved her in the second and was able to make three saves.

Marist's record now stands at 8-6 on the season. The Red Foxes will be back in action on Sunday afternoon when they travel to head coach Andrew Silva's hometown of San Luis Obispo for a tilt with Cal State Monterey Bay. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. pacific time.
