March 15, 2006

Final Stats

BALTIMORE, MD - Sophomores Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Annie Castellano (Happauge, N.Y.) led the Marist Softball squad to a doubleheader sweep of Morgan State on Tuesday. Rigos fired a two hit shutout in game one, while Castellano went 3-4. With the sweep the Foxes moved to within one game of the .500 mark, as they stand at 3-4 on the season.

In game one, Rigos (2-2) recorded her fourth complete game of the season as she gave up just two base hits and struck out seven. Marist's bats came alive as well as Castellano picked up three hits, including two triples. She also knocked in two runs in the game. Senior captain Katie Eskin went 2-4 and knocked in a run in the 5-0 victory.

The Red Foxes held a 2-0 lead until they broke the game open with a three run fifth inning. Laurissa Riley (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) led off with a single up the middle to get the inning started. Chrystine McHugh (Port Ewen, N.Y.) followed with a single of her own to give Marist two on and no one out. Following a sacrifice bunt and a groundout, Castellano knocked in two with a triple. That was followed by Bridget Hurlman's (Yonkers, N.Y.) first career triple to knock in Castellano and give Rigos all the run support she would need.

In game two Marist again got strong pitching and timely hitting. Freshman Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) pitched four innings of two hit ball, striking out a pair. Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) who relieved Kristen Merlino (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.), who worked an inning and two thirds, recorded the final out of the game to pick up her first career save in the Red Foxes 7-4 triumph.

Jasmery Polanco (Bay Shore, N.Y.) went 2-3 in the game, while Riley was a perfect 3-3 at the plate. Green and Christine Jakobsen (Midland Park, N.Y.) drove in two runs apiece in the victory.

Marist will continue its southern swing when they travel to Georgetown, Del. for the Mizuno Bash at the Beach hosted by Delaware State Friday through Sunday. On Friday Marist will square off with St. Francis (N.Y.) at 11 a.m. and then Delaware State at 3 p.m.
