LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Keyed by a balanced scoring attack the Marist Women's Water Polo team won two games on Saturday to advance to the championship round of the Siena Invitational on Sunday afternoon. The Red Foxes opened the day by defeating Mercyhurst 12-5 and then downed host and MAAC foe Siena in the nightcap 8-6.
Against Mercyhurst the Red Foxes featured a scoring attack that featured seven different goal scorers, including four multiple goal scorers. The Foxes were led by freshman Kari Weston (Chino Hills, Calif.) who tallied three goals. Fellow freshmen Caitlin Hopkins (Beaverton, Ore.) and Katelin McCahill (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) each chipped in with two goals in the win. Hopkins added three steals in the contest, while McCahill and Allison Rader (Lansdale, Pa.) each chipped in with two assists.
Katy Zweifel (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) got the start in the cage for Marist and made seven saves. She was spelled by Elizabeth Davis (Albuquerque, N.M.) in the second half who also made seven saves in the victory.
In the second game of the day Marist topped Siena for the second time this season, as it came away with an 8-6 victory. McCahill led the way for the Foxes with three goals, while senior Mary Grisey (Huntington Beach, Calif.) chipped in with two markers. Although Weston did not tally against the Saints she made her presence known by recording four assists and two steals.
Davis started game two in the cage and recorded four saves, while Zweifel registered six stops for Marist in the second half in the win.
With the sweep Marist moved to 13-9 on the season and tied the program record for wins in a season. Marist will be in action tomorrow at 2:15 when it will compete in the championships game of the invitational. Marist's opponent will be determined by games taking place earlier in the day.
