April 1, 2006

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist Softball team ran its winning streak to nine games with a doubleheader sweep of Manhattan on Saturday afternoon. Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) picked up the win in both games, while freshman Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) belted a two-run home run in game two.

Marist held on for a 1-0 win in game one, as Rigos dominated until she ran into some trouble in the seventh inning. The sophomore was perfect into the fifth before she surrendered her first base hit. In the seventh inning the Jaspers put the tying run on third base before Rigos got Manhattan's Tina Buyea to line out to shortstop for the final out. With the win Rigos reached the 10 win plateau for the season as she moved to 10-2 on the season. She gave up just two hits in the contest and struck out six against just one walk.

The Red Foxes scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the first inning when Chrystine McHugh (Port Ewen, N.Y.) scored on a RBI double by Green for a 1-0 lead that would stand the whole game.

In game two, the Red Foxes used the long ball on their way to posting a 4-2 win and completing the sweep of the Jaspers. Green continued her hot streak at the plate as she hit a two-run home run in the first inning. It was her fourth home run of the season and she drove in her team leading 25th and 26th runs with the blast.

Manhattan would tie the score at 2-2 on Marist starter Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) in the top of the second. Marist would answer in the top of the third when Jasmery Polanco (Bay Shore, N.Y.) hit the Red Foxes' second two-run blast of the game for the victory. Rigos would come in to shut the door over the final four innings to earn the win and send Marist to its ninth straight triumph.

For the season the Red Foxes stand at 16-5 overall and a now perfect 2-0 in MAAC play. Marist will be back in action at the Gartland Athletic Field on Sunday when it hosts Saint Peter's for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
