The Marist water polo team won a pair of critical MAAC contests this afternoon, improving its record to 19-12 overall, 6-2 MAAC and clinching a spot at the upcoming conference tournament. The Red Foxes cruised to a 10-3 victory over Siena and toppled Iona, 10-8 in overtime.
Seven different Red Foxes recorded goals in Marist's 10-3 win over the Saints, with a trio of freshmen leading the way. Kari Weston (Chino Hills, Calif.), Katelin McCahill (E. Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Annalyse Arguelles (Albuquerque, N.M.) tallied two goals a piece for the Red and White. McCahill and Weston also tallied two assists each while Weston snagged four steals. Sophomores Elizabeth Davis (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Katy Zweifel (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) split time evenly in goal, grabbing seven and five saves, respectively.
Following its first win of the day, Marist competed in its third overtime contest in the last three weeks, improving its record to 2-1 in extra minutes. The 10-8 victory over the Gaels also marked the Foxes second overtime win against Iona this season. After a 7-7 stalemate at the end of regulation, Marist turned up the offensive pressure, outscoring Iona 3-1 to ensure the win.
Sophomore Allison Rader (Lansdale, Pa.) dished out four assists to pace the offense, as McCahill and classmate Julie Wade (Whittier, Calif.) each scored three goals. Senior Mary Grisey (Huntington Beach, Calif.) tallied two goals in the victory while Abigail Hatcher (Evanston, Ill.) and Weston each grabbed three steals. Davis and Zweifel shared goal time again, tallying eight and 13 saves, respectively.
The Red Foxes will be back in action Sunday when they head to New Rochelle, N.Y. to take on Villanova and St. Francis (Pa.) at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively.
