FAIRFIELD, CONN. - The Marist Softball squad ran its winning streak to 15 games on Sunday afternoon, as it swept Fairfield 5-1 and 8-0. Megan Rigos picked up the win in game one, while senior shortstop Katie Eskin (Edison, N.J.) went 3-3 with 3 RBI in the second game.
The two teams played scoreless ball for the first three innings of game one, until Marist plated two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Chrystine McHugh (Port Ewen, N.Y.) led of the frame by being hit with a pitch. She was driven in two batters later by Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) who picked up her team leading 35th RBI with the base hit. Jasmery Polanco (Bay Shore, N.Y.) would drive Green in with a run scoring double down the right field line.
Annie Castellano (Happauge, N.Y.) added two hits for the Foxes in game one, while Green went 1-3 with 2 RBI.
Rigos' only blemish in the game would come in the home half of the fifth, when she surrendered a run on a bunt base hit. Rigos went the distance in game one, allowing just four hits and the one earned run. She fanned eight Fairfield batters and did not surrender a walk. Rigos' ERA for the season now stands at 0.86 in 114.2 innings of work.
Marist would tack on three insurance runs in the top of the seventh to earn the 5-1 victory.
In game two, Marist left little to chance as it jumped out to a 7-0 lead after just three innings. Marist would add a run in the fourth to earn the 8-0 win in the shortened game.
The Red Foxes would plate three runs in the top of the first with the help of three hits and two Fairfield errors. After a scoreless second inning, Marist put the game out of reach in the third when it tacked on four more runs. Green led of the inning with her eighth home run of the season as Marist scored its four runs on five hits in the frame.
McHugh continued her torrid hitting by going 2-4 in the game with a run scored and two driven in. She is now hitting at a .405 clip for the season. The Red Foxes now have six players who are currently hitting at .300 or better.
Freshman Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) improved to 5-1 on the mound as she gave up three hits over three innings of work. She struck out three batters and walked one. Kristen Merlino (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) pitched the final two innings and surrendered just one hit.
With the sweep Marist moves to 22-5 on the season and is a perfect 6-0 in MAAC play. Marist will be back in action when they play make up games against Rider tomorrow afternoon.
