ANN ARBOR, MICH. - The Marist Women's Water Polo team opened the 2007 season with a split on the first day of Michigan's Kick-off Tournament. The Red Foxes bowed to #13 Michigan 12-5 in their first game, before tipping Colorado State 7-6 in four overtimes in the nightcap. Freshman Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas) scored a total of five goals over the two games, while classmate Angie Rampton (Simi Valley, Calif.) scored the game winner in sudden death overtime against Colorado St.
Against the Wolverines, Barnett and Katelin McCahill each scored two times for Marist and Hilary Schroeder (Santa Barbara, Calif.) also added a marker, the first of her career. Freshman Kari Weston (Chino Hills, Calif.) each recorded an assists against Michigan. Elizabeth Davis made 13 saves in net for Marist in the season opener.
Against Colorado St., Barnett picked up where she left off, notching her first career hat trick against the Rams. McCahill, Schroeder, Rampton and Samantha Swartz (Harleysville, Pa.) also added goals for the Foxes in their first win of the season. Rampton and Swartz picked up their first career goals.
Weston played a strong defensive game for the Red Foxes, as she recorded three steals and two field blocks in the victory. Schroeder also added three steals for Marist.
Davis again recorded double digit saves, posting 12.
With the win, Marist evens its record at 1-1 on the season. The Red Foxes will be back in action on day two of the tournament when they take on UC Santa Cruz at 9:00 a.m. and then #20 Indiana at noon tomorrow.
