Marist Splits On Second Day Of Michigan Kick-Off Tournament

ANN ARBOR, MICH. - The Marist Women's Water Polo team split its two games on day two of Michigan's Kick-off Tournament on Sunday. The Red Foxes beat UC Santa Cruz by a score of 10-3, before falling to #20 Indiana 7-5 to close out the tournament. Katelin McCahill (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) totaled eight goals over the two games, including five against UC Santa Cruz. Sophomore goalie Elizabeth Davis (Albuquerque, N.M.) combined for 19 saves over the two games.

McCahill was one of five different goal scorers in Sunday's first game. Maggie Hatcher (Evanston, Ill.) also tallied multiple times, finding the back of the net twice in the victory. Kari Weston (Chino Hills, Calif.), Julie Wade (Whittier, Calif.) and Hillary Walling (Kingwood, Texas) each scored one goal apiece. McCahill also drew two ejections and two five meters in the win.

Marist also had five different players record assists against UC Santa Cruz. Weston, Kristina Nickle (Lake Worth, Fla.), Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas), Samantha Swartz (Harleysville, Pa.) and Rachel Sunday (Carlisle, Pa.) each posted a helper in the game.

The Red Foxes played a strong defensive game in the win, with Swartz leading five players with multiple steals, posting three. Weston, Barnett, McCahill, and Sunday added two apiece and Walling recorded one steal for Marist. Davis stopped six shots in net for the Red Foxes.

Against the Hoosiers, McCahill again led the way in scoring notching three goals. Caitlin Hopkins (Beaverton, Ore.) and Swartz added one goal apiece. Swartz added two assists, with McCahill, Sunday and Wade each adding one helper.

On the defensive side, Weston posted three steals and Davis stopped double digit shots for the third time in four games, posting 13 saves.

Marist closed out the tournament with a 2-2 record. Marist will be off from competition until February 17 when it will take on Bucknell and Princeton on the first day of the Maryland Invitational.
