BUFFALO, N.Y.- On Sunday afternoon the Marist men's soccer team suffered a 3-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference loss at Canisius. The loss drops the Red Foxes to 4-6-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the MAAC.
The Red Foxes controlled the ball in the Canisius zone for much of the match but were unable to find the back of the net.
"The score doesn't tell the whole story," said Marist Head Coach Matt Viggiano. "We had some lapses and made some young mistakes but overall we didn't play a poor game."
The Red Foxes actually had thirteen corners compared to Canisius's four, and were only out-shot 13-11.
Canisius got on the board in the 27th minute when the Red Foxes had a defensive lap. Griffs keeper Adam Katley punted the ball down the middle of the field and Alan McGreal was able to take it the rest of the way for a score.
Ten minutes later McGreal struck again. This time he beat Marist keeper Tom DeBenedetto (Paramus, N.J.) inside the right post. That gave Canisius a 2-0 lead.
Marist senior Shareif Ali (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) had a strong day putting two shots on goal (three overall). One hit off the lower part of the cross bar and another was tipped wide by the Griffs keeper.
"We made some mistakes a young team makes and that hurt us," added Viggiano. "We had some chances and just didn't capitalize. My hat goes off to their keeper [Kately] as well. He made some big saves."
DeBenedetto took the loss in goal for the Red Foxes. His record falls to 2-2-1.
Marist returns to action next Saturday at home versus Siena. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
