Final Stats
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.- On Friday night the Marist women's soccer team rolled to a 5-1 victory over St. Peter's. The Red Foxes (7-3-2, 4-0 MAAC) scored all five goals during a 23 minute stretch of the first half.
Marist had solid opportunities throughout the entire first half but couldn't find the net after fifteen minutes of play. Finally, after six good shots, sophomore forward Kate Fox (Franklin, Mass.) blasted a shot from 25 yards out and found the top right of the net. It was her third goal of the year. Ashley Chase (Lumberton, N.J.) was credited with the assist.
"We came out a little sluggish, but really turned it up and started to capitalize on some good opportunities," Marist Head Coach Elizabeth Roper said. "We took care of business."
Marist scored again 85 seconds later when Merrilynn Esteve (Morristown, N.J.) scored her fifth goal. The freshman is tied for the team lead in goals. Senior Keri Koegel (Merrick, N.Y.) got the assist.
Goals three and four came one minute and twenty seconds apart. Esteve put a perfect pass to the top left of the box, and Katie Zasly was there to put it in for her fifth score of the year and a 3-0 Marist lead. Then Koegel found Fox for her second goal of the night.
"I thought we played pretty well tonight," said Fox after the win. "We passed well, gave ourselves some good opportunities, and got everyone in on the action."
The Red Foxes got their final score of the night when Haley Hart (Scottsdale, Ariz.) made a beautiful cross to Katelynn Walsh (Westbury, N.Y.) who was able to put it in. It was Walsh's first career goal and Hart's first career assist.
Freshman keeper Allison Lane (Marlton, N.J.) got the win in net. She improves her record to 4-2-2, and has now gone 3-0-1 since returning from an injury.
The win keeps the Red Foxes atop the MAAC standings with a 4-0 record. It is also the Marist women's best start in their ten years as a member of the MAAC.
They will return to action on Sunday, when they host MAAC foe Manhattan. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
