DELAND, FLA. - The Marist softball team split two games Saturday on the second day of the Stetson University Softball Tournament. The Red Foxes fell to Iowa to open the day 5-2 before coming back to beat Howard 2-1 for their first win of the season. Jessica Hulsey (Torrance, Calif.) drove in the game winning run against Howard.
Making her first start of the season against the Hawkeyes, Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) went six innings giving up just two earned runs. She did not walk a batter and struck out four Iowa batters. Rigos falls to 0-1 on the season with the loss to Iowa.
At the plate, Christine Jakobsen (Midland Park, N.J.) went 2-4 with a run scored. Hulsey also posted two hits in the game, while Catenacci ripped a double a drove in both Marist runs. Annie Castellano (Hauppauge, N.Y.) also added a base hit in the game for Marist, who fell to 0-3 heading into the match-up with Howard.
Hulsey played the hero in Marist's first win of the season, going 2-3 with a double and the game winning RBI. Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) went 2-3 in the contest with two doubles and a run scored, while classmate Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.) went 2-2 with an RBI. Castellano added a hit in the game along with a run scored.
Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) went six innings and picked up her first win of the season, improving to 1-1 on the year. She gave up just the one run to go along with five strikeouts. Rigos came on to pitch the final frame and record her first save of the season.
At 1-3 Marist will close out the trip to DeLand with a 9:00 a.m. rematch with Howard tomorrow morning. Check back to GoRedFoxes.com for results.
