DELAND, FLA. - The Marist softball team closed out its trip to DeLand with a 7-6 loss to Howard on Sunday morning. The Red Foxes scored five runs in the seventh inning to get within one, keyed by Alison Catenacci's (Medfield, Mass.) grand slam. Marist falls to 1-4 on the season with the loss.
Marist pounded out 10 base hits in the contest, led by freshman Kyle Shepherd (Seymour, Conn.) and Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) who each went 2-4 in the game. Catenacci went 1-4 in the contest, scoring two runs and driving in four with her grand slam. Senior captain Christine Jakobsen (Midland Park, N.J.) capped off a solid weekend with a double for the Foxes.
Kristen Merlino (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) fell to 0-2 on the season in the loss, pitching a third of an inning and allowing three runs. Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) came on in relief to go 6.2 innings, allowing four runs and striking out five.
Marist will return to Florida on February 23-25 when it takes part in Florida International's Tournament in Miami. The Foxes will take the field against Syracuse and Texas St. on the first day of the tournament.
