DELAND, FLA. - The Marist Softball team opened the 2007 season with two losses on Friday. The Foxes fell to Iowa 8-0 in five innings and then to Stetson 4-0 in their second game. Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) picked up three hits on the day, while captain Christine Jakobsen (Midland Park, N.J.) went 3-4 in the game against Stetson.

In the Foxes first game, Giordano collected the only hit of the game for Marist, going 1-2 in the contest. Junior first baseman Annie Casteallano (Hauppauge, N.Y.) was the only other player to reach base for Marist in the game, as she worked two walks off of Iowa's Amanda Zust (1-0).

Although the Hawkeyes only collected four hits in the game, Zust received all the support she would need when Emily Nicols drove a three-run home run out in the first inning off of Marist starter Kristen Merlino (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.), who dropped to 0-1 on the season. Iowa would plate seven of its runs in the first inning before the Red Foxes recorded an out.

Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) came on in relief in the first and would throw four innings for Marist.. She allowed two hits and struck out five in her first appearance of the season.

Against the Hatters, Marist picked up nine hits, five between Giordano and Jakobsen, but was not able to push across a run in the game. Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.), Lindsey Kinel (East Hartford, Conn.) and Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.) each collected a hit each.

Sophomore Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) took the loss for Marist, pitching a complete game. Over seven innings, she gave up nine hits, four runs and struck out five.

Marist falls to 0-2 on the young season with the loss and will be back in action for a pair of games tomorrow in DeLand. The Foxes will square off with Iowa again tomorrow at 10:00 a.m., before taking on Howard at 12:30.
