NORFOLK, VA. - The Marist Softball Squad dropped a pair of games on Saturday as part of the Spartan Softball Mason Dixon Classic hosted by Norfolk State. The Foxes were defeated 4-1 by Delaware and then 5-0 by MAAC rival Niagara. Sophomore Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) drove in the only Marist run of the day against the Fightin' Blue Hens.

The Red Foxes out hit Delaware on the afternoon 10-7, but were able to push across just the one run. Senior captain Christine Jakobsen (Midland Park, N.J.) led of the third inning with a double and was driven in by Green's RBI single up the middle.

Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) went 3-4 in the contest, while Alison Catenacci (Medford, Mass.) was a perfect 3-3 in the game for Marist.

The Blue Hens scored four runs off Marist starter Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) on seven base hits. Kim Ovittore picked up 2 RBI for the Blue Hens, while starter Samantha Shawn went four innings in the win and allowed just one run on six hits.

Carpentier pitched a complete game, giving up the seven hits and four runs. She struck out a pair and walked two, as she fell to 2-3 on the season.

Against Niagara in game two, the Foxes could only collect two base hits as they were shut out for the fourth time this season. Green and Catenacci were the only Marist players to get a hit in the game, while Giordano worked two walks in the game.

Kristen Merlino (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) went the distance for Marist, giving up seven hits and five runs over seven innings. She struck out two in the game and fell to 0-3 on the season.

At 2-12 on the season the Red Foxes will be back on the diamond tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. then they tangle with Cornell in a double header in Virginia Beach, Va.
