Water Polo Edged By Cal State Monterey Bay, Upends Cal Lutheran

THOUSAND OAKS, CALIF. - The Marist Women's Water Polo team split a pair of games Sunday evening on the west coast in Thousand Oaks, Calif. The Red Foxes were defeated by Cal State Monterey Bay 8-6, but rebounded to defeat Cal Lutheran 9-3. Katelin McCahill (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) scored a pair of goals in each game and added two drawn ejections against Cal Lutheran.

Marist freshmen scored four of the six goals against Monterey Bay, with Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas) scoring twice and Hilary Schroeder (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Samantha Swartz (Harleysville, Pa.) each adding a tally. McCahill also found the back of the net twice for the Foxes. Swartz recorded an assist in the contest, while Barnett and Schroeder each drew two ejections for the Foxes.

On the defensive side, Kari Weston (Chino Hills, Calif.) collected a pair of steals. In goal for the Foxes, Elizabeth Davis (Albuquerque, N.M.) made eight saves and Katy Zweifel (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) stopped eight shots.

The Red Foxes rebounded in their second game of the day with a 9-3 win over Cal Lutheran, their first win on the west coast swing. Weston and McCaihll led the offensive charge with two goals each, with McCahill also adding an assist in the winning effort. Schroeder, Maggie Hatcher (Evanston, Ill.), Angie Rampton (Simi Valley, Calif.), Julie Wade (Whittier, Calif.) and Swartz all contributed a marker for the Foxes in the win. Caitlin Hopkins (Beaverton, Ore.) joined McCahill in the assist column, with one helper in the contest.

The Red Foxes had three players with two steals in the game, with Schroeder, Hatcher and Swartz each turning Cal Lutheran over twice.

Davis went the distance in goal for Marist in the nightcap, making eight saves and collecting two steals. Davis also blocked a five-meter penalty shot to help Marist to its 10th victory of the season.

With the split on Sunday, Marist moves to 10-11 on the season. After an off day on Monday, the Red Foxes will return to the pool on Tuesday when they tangle with Cal State Northridge at 5 p.m. eastern and Occidental at 6:30 p.m. eastern in Northridge, Calif.
