Game One Box Score
PHILADELPHIA, PA. - The Marist Softball team powered its way past La Salle in a doubleheader sweep, winning 2-0 and 10-5 on Tuesday afternoon. The Red Foxes clubbed five home runs in the game two victory and four of their five hits in game one were doubles. Junior Annie Castellano (Hauppauge, N.Y.) went 2-2 in the first game, while Melissa Giordano picked up four hits (4-5) in game two.
The Foxes opened the scoring in the first game in the top of the opening frame when Christine Jakobsen (Midland Park, N.J.) doubled to lead off and was driven in by Castellano with two outs. Marist would tack on the only other run of the game in the top of the third inning when Pamela de la Llave (West Orange, N.J.) scored on a wild pitch after leading the inning off with a double.
Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) went the distance and picked up her first win of the season (1-5). Over seven innings she allowed just one hit and one walk, while striking out seven Explorer batters.
Marist continued its hot hitting in game two, as it hit five home runs and totaled seven extra base hits. Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.), whose ten game hitting streak came to an end in game one, went 2-4 in the game with two home runs and six RBI. One of Green's home runs was a grand slam and she added a walk and two runs scored to her impressive line.
Giordano went 4-5 in the contest with two singles, a double and a home run to go along with two runs scored. Jakobsen added a home run, as did Castellano. Sophomore Lindsey Kinel (East Hartford, Conn.) also had a strong game at the plate, going 3-4 with a double. The top five hitters in the Marist lineup combined to go 12-21.
Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) improved to 3-4 on the season with five strong innings for the Foxes. Over that span she did not allow a run, did not walk a batter, surrendered just three hits and struck out four.
With the sweep, Marist's first of the season, it improves to 4-14 overall on the season. The Red Foxes will look to extend their first winning streak of the year this weekend when they take part in Delaware State's Bash At The Beach from March 16-18.
