WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Marist Softball squad split a doubleheader at Hudson Valley rival Army on Saturday afternoon. The Red Foxes scored a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning in game one to earn their third straight win, as Christine Jakobsen (Midland Park, N.J.) went 2-4 and Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) pitched a complete game in the win. The Foxes would fall 5-3 in game two with Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) connecting on her fifth home run of the season in the loss.
The Foxes scored the first two runs of the game in the third inning, before the Black Knights tied the score with two runs of their own in the home half of the fifth. Neither team would push across another run until Marist plated two in the eighth to earn the win.
Jakobsen and Annie Castellano (Hauppauge, N.Y.) and Jessica Hulsey (Torrance, Calif.) also had base hits in the game.
Rigos allowed seven hits in eight innings, allowing just two runs. She walked four batters in the outing and struck out eight in her second win of the season.
In game two on Saturday Marist's Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) came out firing, as she struck out the first seven Army batters that she faced. She struck out 11 and walked only one in 5.1 innings of work in game two. She allowed all five Army runs and fell to 3-5 on the season.
Green's two-run shot in the first frame opened the scoring and gave Marist an early two run lead. The Red Foxes added a run in the third inning, before Army scored five runs in their final three at-bats.
Catenacci had two more hits in the second game, while Pamela de la Llave (West Orange, N.J.) went 2-3 in the contest with an RBI. Jakobsen, Green and Catenacci all crossed the plate for Marist in the tilt.
At 5-15 Marist will be back in action on March 27 when it travels to Binghamton for a doubleheader with the Bearcats. The Foxes are scheduled to open their home schedule on March 28 against Central Connecticut State.
