Marist Sinks Connecticut College, Drops Overtime Heartbreaker To #13 Hartwick

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist Women's Water Polo team split its first two home games of the season on Sunday, beating Connecticut College 17-3 and then falling in overtime to #13 Hartwick 11-10. The Foxes used 11 different goal scorers in their win over the Camels, including Molly Mihalcik's (New York, N.Y.) first career marker. Sophomore Kari Weston (Chino Hills, Calif.) led Marist against Hartwick with four goals and three assists.

Marist jumped on the Camels early on Sunday, as it held a 7-2 lead after the first quarter and a 13-2 advantage at the halftime intermission. 11 players scored and of those, four found the back of the net at least twice. Katelin McCahill (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) paced the Foxes with three goals apiece, while Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas) and Angie Rampton (Simi Valley, Calif.) each tallied twice.

McCahill added a pair of assists in the win and classmate Kristen Powers (Los Altos, Calif.) drew five ejections to go along with a goal in the winning effort.

Junior captain Katy Zweifel (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) got the start in goal and made five saves and fellow captain Elizabeth Davis (Albuquerque, N.M.) came on the in the second and also stopped five shots. Samantha Swartz also played a strong defensive game for Marist, collecting three steals in the contest.

Marist had another balanced scoring attack against Hartwick, as six players found the back of the net, including Rampton who forced the game into overtime with a goal with :01 remaining in regulation time.

Weston led Marist with her four goals to go along with three assists. Swartz scored a pair of goals for Marist and McCahill contributed three assists and five drawn ejections against the Hawks.

Davis played the full game in goal for Marist and recorded 18 saves and three steals.

At 12-13 on the season, the Foxes will be back in action for another home match on March 29 against Gannon. Game time in the McCann Natatorium is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
