NEWARK, N.J. - The Marist Softball team opened the MAAC schedule by splitting a doubleheader at Manhattan on Saturday afternoon in Newark, N.J. The Red Foxes fell 5-4 in an 11 inning heartbreaker in the first game, before rebounding to defeat the Jaspers 3-2 in the second game. Sophomore Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) had five hits over the two games, including her seventh home run in the top of the eleventh in game one.

Manhattan jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning of game one, keyed by RBI singles from Lyndzie Phillips and Stefanie Gozdziewski.

The Red Foxes cut the two-run deficit in half in the top of the fourth on a two-out run scoring single by Lindsey Kinel (East Hartford, Conn.). Marist then jumped out to a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning on a two-out, two run double by Alison Catenacci (Medford, Mass.).

The Jaspers came back to tie the score in the home fifth on a run scoring single by Phillips, who went 2-4 with a run scored and two RBI in the contest.

The score remained tied until the top of the eleventh inning when Green gave Marist a one run lead with a solo home run to lead off the frame. Green went 3-6 in the game with three runs scored and an RBI.

The Jaspers, though, earned the win with two runs in the home half of the inning. The crushing blow was a two run single by Michelle Gutierrez.

In the game, Marist had four players with at least two hits. Pamela de la Llave (West Orange, N.J.) joined Green with three hits in game one. The Red Foxes out hit the Jaspers in the game 14-8, but left 15 runners on base.

Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) took the loss in relief, going 5.1 innings, giving up three hits, two runs and striking out 10.

In game two, the Foxes used single runs in the third, sixth and seventh innings to gain the split. The winning run was delivered when de la Llave and Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) hit back-to-back doubles off of Liz Pennino.

Marist opened the scoring in game two on a run scoring single by Green. After Manhattan tied the score at 1-1, the Foxes retook the lead at 2-1 on the strength of a two-out RBI single from freshman Jessica Hulsey (Torrance, Calif.). Marist had five players record two hits in the win, with Giordano, Green and de la Llave also adding runs. The Foxes held the advantage in hits again in game two, with a 10-5 advantage.

With the split Maris stands at 8-18 on the season and 1-1 in MAAC play. The Foxes will return to action for a non-conference game against Albany on April 3 in Poughkeepsie. This will be a single game only, with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Softball Park at Gartland Athletic Field.
