Red Foxes Defeated By #12 UC-Santa Barbara, #15 UC San Diego

March 9, 2007

SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. - The Marist Women's Water Polo team dropped a pair of games to nationally ranked opponents on Friday, falling 7-5 to #12 UC-Santa Barbara and 12-3 to #15 UC-San Diego. Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas) scored three goals over the two games, including two goals against Santa Barbara.

Barnett led the Foxes with her two goals, while Maggie Hatcher (Evanston, Ill.), Katelin McCahill (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Samantha Swartz (Harleysville, Pa.) each found the back of the net once for Marist. Kari Weston (Chino Hills, Calif.) and Barnett recorded an assist in the game.

On defense, Weston posted a field block and drawn ejection, while reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week Hilary Schroeder (Santa Barbara, Calif.) recorded a steal and four drawn ejections in her hometown.

In goal, Elizabeth Davis (Albuquerque, N.M.) got the start and made six saves in the first half. Katy Zweifel (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) came on in the second half and made four saves for the Foxes.

The Gauchos were led by Sarah Kovach and Gillian Morgan who each scored two goals in the win.

After dropping a hard fought game to the Gauchos earlier in the day, Marist fell to San Diego in the night cap. Marist trailed by just one goal after the first period and just three at the half. San Diego pulled away from the Foxes with a five goal fourth quarter.

Barnett, McCahill and Swartz were the goal scorers for the Foxes, with Weston, Angie Rampton (Simi Valley, Calif.) and Hillary Walling (Kingwood, Texas) recording an assist apiece.

On defense, Hatcher and McCahill each collected a steal each, while McCahill and Weston both drew two ejections in the game.

Davis and Zweifel split time in net for the Foxes with both stopping six shots each.

Marist will be back in action at the Santa Barbara mini-tournament tomorrow morning when it takes on Redlands and #8 San Diego St. at 3:00 p.m. eastern and 6:00 p.m. eastern, respectively.
