NORFOLK, VA. - The Marist Softball team split its first two games at the Spartan Softball Classic on Friday afternoon. The Red Foxes were defeated 10-2 by host Norfolk St., before coming back to defeat Binghamton 5-2. Sophomore Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) picked up a pair of hits in each game, while senior captain Christine Jakobsen (Midland Park, N.J.) went 3-5 against Binghamton.
Marist got on the board first when Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) and Annie Castellano (Hauppauge, N.Y.) led off the top of the fourth with back-to-back doubles. Green went 1-3 in the contest with a run scored, while Castellano and Samantha Schubert (Maybrook, N.Y.) drove in Marist's only two runs.
Norfolk St. put four runs on the board in the bottom of the inning keyed by a two run single by Meghan Ramsey. The Spartans would put the game away with a single run in the fifth and five more in the sixth.
Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) fell to 0-5 with the loss, going five innings. Rigos allowed eight hits and four earned runs over that span. She did not walk a batter and struck out five in the game.
The Red Foxes ended a seven game losing streak, defeating Binghamton 5-2 in their second game of the day. Marist built a four run cushion through three innings, plating a pair of runs in the first and two more in the third.
Marist opened the scoring on four hits in the first inning. Jakobsen led off the game with a double to left center, before Giordano and Green followed with singles to load the bases. Jakobsen was driven in by Schubert who worked a walk and Alison Catenacci (Medford, Mass.) followed with a single for the Foxes' second run of the frame.
After being retired in order in the second, Marist collected two more runs on the strength of three hits in the third. Green led off the inning with a double down the left field line and was driven in later in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Catenacci for her second RBI of the game. Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.) drove in the second run of the inning with a double to right center field, her first double and third RBI of the season.
Marist added an insurance run in the fifth inning, as the Foxes picked up their second win of the season.
Marist had five players with multiple hits, led by Jakobsen's three. Giordano, Green, Catenacci and Pomes all had two, with Catenacci leading the team with her two RBI.
Sophomore Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) earned the win for Marist, pitching a complete game. She allowed two runs; only one earned over seven innings and struck out four as she improved to 2-2 on the season.
At 2-10 on the season, Marist will go for its second straight victory tomorrow morning when it takes on Delaware at 9 a.m. and MAAC rival Niagara at 1 p.m.
