POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist Softball team ran its season long winning streak to four on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of Fairfield, 6-2 and 5-3. Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) got the win in game one and her third save of the season in game two. Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.), Annie Castellano (Hauppauge, N.Y.) and Pamela de la Llave (West Orange, N.J.) all hit home runs for the Foxes.
Fairfield got on the board first in the first game, as the Stags plated two runs in the top of the third on a two-run home run by Kristie Trifiolis. That would be all the scoring the Stags would do in the game and the blast would be one of just three hits for Fairfield in the game.
Marist answered in the bottom half of the inning with four runs of their own, to take a lead it would not relinquish. The Foxes scored all four runs with two outs in the frame. Lindsey Kinel (East Hartford, Conn.), Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.), de la Llave and Christine Jakobsen (Midland Park, N.Y.) all had run scoring hits in the inning.
Marist would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on the strength of Giordano's two-run homer, her third of the season.
Both Giordano and Alison Catenacci (Medfield, Mass.) went 2-4 in the game with a run scored. Pomes and de la Llave also picked up two hits each, going 2-3 in the contest with a run scored and an RBI.
Rigos improved to 7-9 on the season with the complete game win. She gave up two runs on three hits and struck out three in the game. She walked just one batter in the game.
Fairfield once again got on the board first in game two. The Stags took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning on a run scoring single to left field by Breanne Morschauser. Marist again answered with four runs in the bottom half of the frame, with three coming on Castellano's third long ball of the season. The Foxes added another run in the bottom of the sixth on de la Llave's solo balst. Fairfield went on to score single runs in both the sixth and seventh innings but were not able to get closer to 5-3.
Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) picked up the win in the game, going four innings and allowing just one run. She gave up four hits and a walk, while striking out a pair of Fairfield hitters. Rigos came on for the final three innings to earn her third save. She gave up two earned runs and struck out one.
With the win the Foxes improve to 12-22 overall on the season and 5-3 in the MAAC. They will return to the field on Wednesday when they will take on Rider. The doubleheader scheduled for tomorrow will be played Wednesday and the originally scheduled Seton Hall doubleheader will be played at a date to be announced.
