POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist Softball team ran its winning streak to six games on Wednesday with a doubleheader sweep of Rider 5-3 and 2-1. Annie Castellano (Hauppauge, N.Y.) drove in three runs in game one and Pamela de la Llave (West Orange, N.J.) and Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) hit solo blasts in the fifth inning of game two to send Marist to the win.
Castellano got Marist out of the gates quickly in game one, connecting on a two run home run, her fourth of the season, in the bottom half of the first inning. Castellano would add an RBI single in the fifth for Marist and finished the game 2-3 with a run scored and three RBI.
After Rider cut the Marist lead to a run in the top of the third, Giordano shot a single through the right side, driving in de la Llave to give Marist its two run cushion back. The scored remained 3-1 until Rider's Tiffany Day-Nuetill tied the game with a majestic two-run home run to left off of Marist starter Megan Rigos.
Marist would push across the deciding two runs in the home half of the fifth inning on a run scoring double from Christine Jakobsen (Midland Park, N.J.) and an RBI single from Castellano.
Jakobsen, Giordano and Castellano all went 2-3 with a run scored in the contest as Marist out hit Rider 9-8. Jessica Hulsey (Torrance, Calif.), Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.) and de la Llave added the other hits for the Red Foxes, with Pomes and de la Llave also scoring a run.
Rigos went the distance on the mound, allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits and two walks. She struck out eight Rider batters in the game as she improved to 8-9 on the season.
Game two was a pitcher's dual throughout. The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth when Rider pushed across its only run of the game on a RBI double to left field by second baseman Candice Harris.
Marist would answer with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on solo home runs by de la Llave, her fourth of the season, and Giordano, also her fourth of the year.
Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) picked up the win and improved to 6-8 on the season. She threw five innings and allowed one run on seven hits and a walk. She fanned four Broncs over her five innings of work. Rigos came on and saved her fourth contest by pitching two scoreless innings, allowing a hit and a walk. She struck out four batters to give her 12 over the two games.
The sweep moves Marist to 14-22 overall on the season and 7-3 in the MAAC. The Red Foxes will stay at home on Sunday, April 22 when they play host to MAAC rival Iona. The twinbill is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Softball Park at Gartland Athletics Field.
