POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist Softball team ran its winning streak to eight games on Sunday, sweeping Iona by scores of 8-0 and 3-2. Junior lefthander Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) fired a no-hitter in a shortened first game and sophomore Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) hit home runs in each game. Annie Castellano (Hauppauge, N.Y.) drove in the winning run in game two with a solo shot down the left field line in the home half of the sixth inning.

Marist wasted little time getting on the board in game one on Sunday, pushing across four runs in the opening inning. Christine Jakobsen (Midland Park, N.J.) opened the inning with a walk and was moved to third after a Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) double. Castellano drove in the first Marist run with a single through the right side. Giordano crossed on a wild pitch and Jessica Hulsey (Torrance, Calif.) and Lindsey Kinel (East Hartford, Conn) also drove in runs in the inning.

The Red Foxes put four more runs on the board in the second with Green driving in three with her blast out to right center.

Rigos had all the run support she needed, as she allowed just three Iona base runners in her first no-hitter of the season. Rigos walked just one batter and struck out 10 Iona batters in five innings of work. She improves to 9-9 on the season.

Castellano and Pamela de la Llave (West Orange, N.J.) each collected two hits in the game and Jakobsen and Green each scored a pair of runs.

In game two runs were harder to come across. Iona put the first run of the game on the board when Angie Ortiz scored on a single and then an outfield error for its first lead of the day.

Marist answered in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs on the strength of home runs from Green and Castellano. Giordano led of the inning with a double and was driven home on Green's second blast of the day. Castellano followed with a shot that hugged the left field line all the way out. Castellano's blast proved to be the game winner.

Giordano went 2-3 in game two with a pair of doubles and also scored a run. Green went 1-3 with a run and a pair of RBI.

Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) gave up just two runs in 6.2 innings of work, allowing seven hits and striking out two. With the victory, Carpentier improves her record to 7-8. Rigos came on to get the final out, a strikeout, to record her fifth save of the season.

With the sweep, Marist improves to 16-22 overall on the season and 9-3 in the MAAC. The Red Foxes will step out of conference on Tuesday, April 24 when they host Fordham. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Softball Park at Gartland Athletic Field.
