POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist Softball team extended its winning streak to nine with a 6-4 victory over Fordham (33-16) in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. The streak came to an end in the back end of the twinbill with Fordham taking game two 7-0. Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) picked up her tenth win of the season in Marist's win and was supported by home runs from Christine Jakobsen (Midland Park, N.J.), Pamela de la Llave (West Orange, N.J.) and Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.).
After Rigos pitched a perfect first inning, Jakobsen led off the first for the Foxes with her fifth long ball of the season; a line drive over the left center field fence.
Fordham would answer that score with two runs of its own in the top half of the third inning. After the Rams loaded the bases with two outs Melissa Andrews shot a single through the left side to give Fordham a 2-1 lead heading into the home half of the inning.
Marist again used the long ball to retake the lead. De la Llave led off the frame with a drive to center field and after a walk to Jakobsen and a single from Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.), Green launched her 10th of the season. The three-run shot now gives her 28 RBI on the season.
The teams would trade runs in the fifth inning, with Fordham getting a solo home run from leadoff hitter Allison Twarowski. The Foxes would get the run back on a run scoring single from first baseman Annie Castellano (Hauppauge, N.Y.). Fordham would close out the scoring with an RBI double from Krystle Henry in the seventh.
For the game, Green was 2-3 with two runs scored and three driven in, while Giordano went 1-3 with a run and extended her hitting streak to 10 games. Jakobsen scored a pair of runs in the contest and de la Llave added a run and an RBI.
Rigos went the distance in the win and improved to 10-9 on the season. She allowed six hits and four runs, while striking out five Fordham batters.
In game two, Fordham pounded out 13 hits to get their seven runs, including four that went for extra bases. The Rams struck for two runs in the third on run scoring hits from Andrews and Allison Stroc. That would be all that starter Nicole Ayres (14-4) would need as she spun the shutout, allowing seven hits and striking out four.
Green collected two more hits in the second game and Giordano extended her streak to 11 games after going 1-3. Freshman Kyle Shepherd (Seymour, Conn.) went 2-3 in the contest for the Foxes.
Sophomore Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) pitched the complete game and fell to 7-9 on the season. She gave up five earned runs and struck out four while not allowing a walk.
At 17-23 overall the Red Foxes will return to league play on Saturday and Sunday when they make the Western New York Swing. Saturday they will square off with Niagara at noon and on Sunday Canisius is on the schedule also at noon.
