NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. - The Marist Softball team dropped a MAAC doubleheader at Niagara on Saturday afternoon by the scores of 9-3 and 4-2. Sophomore Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) went 2-3 in game one and drove in two runs in game two for the Red Foxes.

Niagara broke up a scoreless game in the opener with a run in the home half of the second inning on an RBI from Heather Lohrman. The Purple Eagles would go on to plate three more runs in the third inning on back-to-back home runs from Tory Healy and Lisa Baker and a run scoring triple from Melissa Markle.

The Red Foxes cut into the lead with a run in the fourth and two in the fifth. The run in the fourth was pushed across on an RBI single from sophomore Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.). Marist's two runs in the fifth came courtesy of a run scoring double from Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.), her eighth of the season, and an RBI single from Annie Castellano (Hauppauge, N.Y.).

That would be all the Red Foxes would get off of Niagara starter Brooke Viola. She hurled five innings, allowing eight hits, three earned runs and a walk. Viola struck out four as she improved to 8-7 on the season.

Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) took the loss for Marist and fell to 10-10 on the season. In 4.2 innings of work, she allowed five earned runs on nine hits and struck out four.

Giordano was 2-4 in the contest and Castellano also picked up two hits going 2-3 with an RBI. Christine Jakobsen (Midland Park, N.J.), Green and Jessica Hulsey (Torrance, Calif.) all scored runs for the Foxes.

In game two, Marist got both of its runs in the top of the first when Giordano connected on her fifth home run of the season. Jakobsen led of the game with a single and was driven in on the long ball for Marist's only scoring in the contest.

Niagara pulled ahead with three runs in the home fourth inning with the help of two Marist errors. The Purple Eagles put the game away with a run in the sixth inning after a Jenna Baker double and a sacrifice fly from Jamie Constantz.

Castellano was again 2-3 in game two, while Jakobsen and Giordano each added a hit and a run scored.

Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) took the loss for the Foxes and fell to 7-10 on the year. The sophomore right hander threw 5.2 innings, allowing seven hits, just two earned runs and a walk in the outing. She fanned seven batters in the contest.

With the sweep Marist drops to 17-25 on the season and 9-5 in the MAAC. Marist will return to the diamond on Sunday at noon when it takes on Canisius in Buffalo.
