Game 2 Box Score
BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Marist Softball squad closed out its MAAC schedule on Sunday with a pair of losses to Canisius 8-0 and 4-0. Sophomore Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) connected on her ninth double of the season in game one and accounted for Marist's only hit in the contest. Senior captain Christine Jakobsen (Midland Park, N.J.) went 1-3 in game two and also had Marist's only hit in the game.
Canisius gave starting pitcher Courtney Piar all the run support she would need with a two run first inning. The Griffs would add single runs in the third and fifth innings and then would hang a four spot in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away. Jenny Maheu went 2-4 with two runs scored in the game and Jess Martin went 1-3 with four RBI.
Green led off the fourth inning for Marist with her double to right center. Piar would walk two batters in the inning and the Foxes had the bases loaded and one out. Piar, though, rebounded and eventually struck out the side to thwart the threat. In six innings of work, Piar allowed just the one hit and struck out 13 Marist batters.
Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) fell to 10-11 on the season with loss. She allowed seven earned runs on 11 hits and struck out seven batters.
In game two, Jakobsen led of the game with a single to right field for the Foxes lone hit of the contest, as they were out hit in the game 9-1.
Canisius broke open a scoreless game with a four run fifth. The Griffs opened the inning with four straight hits, including a double from Angela Turrey to lead off the inning. Maheu drove in the first two with a two-run single and that was followed by a run scoring single from Jamie Gerace. Maheu scored the final run of the frame on a wild pitch.
Lindsay Garbacz earned the win for Canisius after allowing just a hit and a walk and striking out 11. She improved to 8-6 on the season.
Sophomore Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) dropped to 7-11 with the loss. She worked 4.2 innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits. She struck out five batters and did not allow a walk in the outing.
With the sweep, Marist has lost five straight and stands at 17-27 on the season and holds a 9-7 mark in MAAC play. The Red Foxes will close out the regular season on May 3 with a road non-conference doubleheader at Stony Brook. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
