POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist Softball team was swept in a non-conference doubleheader by Albany on Tuesday afternoon by the scores of 7-2 and 2-1. Pamela de la Llave's (West Orange, N.J.) 10-game hitting streak came to an end in game two of the twinbill as the Foxes dropped to 8-22 overall on the season. De la Llave went 2-2 in the first game with an RBI, while Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) went 2-3 in game two with an RBI.
Albany wasted little time getting on the board, scoring single runs in the first and second innings, before exploding for four runs in the third. In the third, the Great Danes plated their four runs on four hits with the big blow being a two out, two-run double to right center field by Bailey Van Deest. Albany closed out its scoring in the sixth inning on a run scoring double by Meagan Butsch.
Marist got on the board with two runs in the home half of the sixth, connecting on three hits. Green and Annie Castellano (Hauppauge, N.Y.) opened the frame with back-to-back singles. Following a fly out and a walk to Danielle Cibelli (Paramus, N.J.), Lindsey Kinel (East Hartford, Conn.) singled to right field to drive in Marist's first run. De la Llave forced in the second run on a two out walk to close out the scoring in the contest.
Albany out hit Marist in the game 12-7 and both teams left nine runners on base.
Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) took the loss for the Foxes and fell to 3-8 on the season. She worked three innings, giving up eight hits, six runs, all earned and two walks. Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) came on to work the final four frames, giving up four hits, an unearned run and a walk. She struck out eight Albany batters.
The two teams hooked up in a pitchers dual in game two, with Albany starter Leah McIntosh retiring the first nine Marist hitters, eight via the strikeout. Rigos started for Marist and after a hit in the first inning, did not surrender another base runner until the fourth and another hit until the fifth.
Marist broke up a scoreless game in the bottom of the fourth when Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) led of the frame with a double, was moved to third on a ground out by Christine Jakobsen (Midland Park, N.J.) and was driven in on a double by Green, her seventh of the season.
The lead stuck until the top of the sixth when Nicole Kothe and Michelle Connors hit back-to-back home runs for Albany, giving the Great Danes a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.
McIntosh took the win and improved to 5-3. She struck out 12 Marist batters in the complete game win. Rigos also went the distance, giving up just four hits and two walks, while striking out 10. She falls to 5-9 on the season with the loss.
At 8-22 overall on the season, Marist will return to MAAC play on Saturday, April 7 when it hosts Siena. First pitch for the doubleheader in scheduled for noon at Gartland Athletic Field.
