POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist Softball squad evened its MAAC record at 3-3 on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of Siena. Senior captain Christine Jakobsen (Midland Park, N.J.) went 2-3 in Marist's 8-5 game one win, with two home runs and four RBI. In game two Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) and Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) each went 3-4, a 5-3 Marist victory, with Green driving in the game winning runs in the sixth inning with the scored tied at 3-3.
The Foxes took an early 1-0 lead in game one, when Jakobsen was forced home on a walk to Annie Castellano (Hauppauge, N.Y.), Jessica Hulsey (Torrance, Calif.) and Lindsey Kinel (East Hartford, Conn.) all drove in runs.
The Foxes would go on to plate a pair of runs in the third. After a single by Pamela de la Llave (West Orange, N.Y.) to lead off the inning, Jakobsen connected on her second two-run shot of the game.
Siena would fight back in the game, scoring all five of its runs in the final three innings off of Marist starter Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.), with three off those coming in the sixth inning.
For the game Marist out hit Siena 9-4, with Jakobsen being the only member of the lineup to have two hits. She also scored three runs in the contest.
Rigos improved to 6-9 on the season with the victory, firing the complete game and giving up three earned runs on four hits. She walked five batters and struck out eight in the win.
Game two was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when the Red Foxes scored two runs to take a 2-0 lead. Giordano scored the first run of the inning after leading off the inning with a single. She was chased home after an infield hit by Green and a throwing error. Hulsey knocked in Green with a two-out single to right.
Siena, though, came back in the top half of the sixth to plate three runs and take the lead for the first time of the day. The Saints were the recipients of two unearned runs in the inning, as the Foxes made two errors in the frame.
The Foxes opened the sixth inning with the first three batters reaching safely. De la Llave led off with a single and advance on a walk to Jakobsen. A single by Giordano loaded the bases for Green with nobody out. After falling behind in the count, she shot a ball down the right field line to drive in the game tying and eventual game winning run.
In addition to her three hits, she scored a run and drove in the two. Giordano added two runs scored in the game for the Foxes, who out hit the Saints 10-7 in the game.
Sophomore Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) earned the win and moved to 4-8 on the season. She worked six innings, giving up seven hits and three runs, no of which were earned. She struck out two batters and walked one. Rigos pitched a scoreless seventh to earn her second save of the season.
At 10-22 overall on the season and 3-3 in the league, Marist will be off until April 14 when it hosts Fairfield. First pitch for the doubleheader is scheduled for noon at the Softball Park at Gartland Athletic Field.
