VILLANOVA, PA. - The Marist Women's Water Polo team opened the MAAC Water Polo League Schedule by beating Wagner 7-6 in overtime and St. Francis (N.Y.) 10-4. Freshmen Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas) and Samantha Swartz (Harleysville, Pa.) scored a pair of goals in both games. Angie Rampton (Simi Valley, Calif.) scored the game winning goal against the Seahawks with 1:58 remaining in the second overtime period.
Marist had five different players record goals against Wager, with Hilary Schroeder (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Katelin McCahill (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) joining Barnett, Swartz and Rampton in the scoring column. Swartz added three assists in the game, while Maggie Hatcher (Evanston, Ill.) collected three steals in the winning effort.
Junior captain Elizabeth Davis (Albuquerque, N.M.) went the distance in goal for Marist, making 10 saves, recording a steal and posting an assist in the Foxes second win of the season over Wagner.
The Red Foxes also used a balanced scoring attack against St. Francis (N.Y.) in the second game of the day. Marist had seven different players score in the win, with Barnett, McCahill and Swartz all scoring twice. Schroeder, Caitlin Hopkins (Beaverton, Ore.), Emily St. Omer Roy (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) and Rachel Sunday (Carlisle, Pa.) rounded out the scorers for the Red Foxes.
McCahill also posted three assists in the win and Schroeder drew two ejections. On the defensive side, Barnett registered three steals.
Junior goalie Katy Zweifel (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) played the full game for Marist and made nine saves to earn the win.
At 15-13 overall and 2-0 in the MAAC Water Polo League, Marist will return to action at home on April 14. The Foxes will host MAAC foes Wagner and Iona looking to remain unbeaten in the league. Game times are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. in the McCann Natatorium.
