EL PASO, TEXAS - The Marist volleyball team won its second match of the day at the Sun Bowl Invitational on Saturday, earning a 3-1 triumph over Texas-Pan American. The Red Foxes prevailed by scores of 30-21, 31-29, 21-30, 30-22, as sophomore setter Dawn Jan (Belleville, N.J.) finished with 53 assists and 15 digs, while freshman middle blocker Allie Burke (Alpharetta, Ga.) hit .611 for the match. Burke was named to the All-Tournament team.
"It was a complete effort to do what we did tonight against a quality opponent," Marist Head Coach Tom Hanna said.
Junior right side and co-captain Kelsey Schaefer (Maria Stein, Ohio) finished with 11 kills, 18 digs and five blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Texas) led Marist with 17 kills. Burke totaled 14 kills and four blocks. Freshman libero Emily Brosky (Whitehall, Pa.) led the Red Foxes in digs with 20.
Making her first career start, freshman outside hitter Christy Lukes (Mesa, Ariz.) added four kills, five aces, six digs and five blocks for the Red Foxes, who were down two players due to illness in the match.
Marist completes play in the Sun Bowl Invitational with a 2-2 record, as the Red Foxes won both of their Saturday matches after dropping a pair of matches on Friday. Earlier in the day, the Red Foxes earned a 3-0 win over Texas Southern.
The Red Foxes will return home for the "Volley in the Valley" Tournament, co-hosted by Marist and Army. Marist will host Quinnipiac and Rutgers at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., respectively, Friday, followed by a 7 p.m. match against Air Force on Saturday.
