Final Stats

Highlights

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist men's soccer team came out strong against the Manhattan Jaspers. Freshman Lucas Szabo (Bethesda, Md.) scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season to account for the offense for the Red Foxes, as Marist battled to a 2-2 draw with the visiting Jaspers.

Szabo scored his first goal in the 20th minute after he received a ball from senior Luis Andre (Matawan, N.J.), and put it into the back of the net. For the remainder of the stanza, Marist was able to hold the ball in the Manhattan half of the field. In the first half, the Red Foxes out shot the Jaspers 4-2, and held a 2-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Marist would strike again less than a minute into the first half, when Szabo took a pass from sophomore Nico Mossa (Pelham, N.Y.) and finished by beating the Jaspers' goalkeeper, John Ciano. However, Manhattan would not go down without a fight.

The Jaspers, picked to finish tenth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) this season, would score goals in the 73rd and 84th minutes would force extra periods.

In the overtime periods the Red Foxes had a number of chances to get a "golden goal." In the 95th minute, freshman Caleb Shaw (Hampton, N.H.) had a header from eight yards away, but the save was made by Ciano.

While in the final frame, Marist was fouled, just outside the left side of the box. The infraction set up a free kick for the Red Foxes. Freshman Krystian Witkowski (Rochester, N.Y.) took the free kick. The play did not amount to a shot, but the opportunity to end the game was there.

Scott Kessler (Jericho, N.Y.) is 1-0-1 in his last two starts, and made seven saves in the first MAAC match of his collegiate career.

The Red Foxes return to action Sunday at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field, when the men's soccer program hosts St. Peter's at 5 p.m. On Friday afternoon Saint Peter's fell to Siena 3-1 on the Saints home field.
