POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist College Athletics Department released the 2009 women's lacrosse schedule on Tuesday morning. The 16-game slate features seven home games that span from Mar. 4, through Apr. 19.
The Red Foxes will open the season as they trade between road trips and a three-game home stand. Marist opens the season with two games on the road at Yale on Saturday, Feb. 21, and Lafayette on Wednesday, Feb. 25 respectively. Last season the Red Foxes trounced the Leopards 22-4 at Tenney Stadium on Mar. 31, 2008.
After the two game road swing, Marist will have their home opener on Wednesday, Mar. 4 at 4 p.m. when the Stony Brook Seawolves come to Marist to face the Red Foxes. Marist will also face Columbia and the University of Connecticut during the six day stand.
Following the three games at Tenney Stadium, the Red Foxes will take to the road for four games. The road trip will include two games in North Carolina against Davidson on Mar. 18, and then against Presbyterian at noon two days later. This is the first meeting between Marist and both Davidson and Presbyterian.
Marist will conclude the four-game road trip when they open Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play against Siena and Manhattan on Mar. 25 and Mar. 27 respectively.
The Red Foxes return home two days later to face Iona on Sunday, Mar. 29, before travelling to Fairfield at the end of the week on Friday, Apr. 3 for a 3:30 start. Marist compiled a 1-1 record against Iona and Fairfield last season. They defeated Iona 15-13 and fell to Fairfield in overtime. The final score was 11-10.
Over the next two games Marist will step away from MAAC competition to face two Patriot League foes in Colgate and Bucknell. Last season the Red Foxes met the Red Raiders for a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Colgate prevailed as Marist's come back fell one goal short, as the Red Foxes suffered a 19-18 loss in Hamilton, N.Y.
The last three games of the season are against New York opponents with two of the three matches being played in Poughkeepsie. Marist will host Niagara and Canisius on Apr. 17 and Apr. 19 respectively. The Red Foxes will wrap up the regular season at Binghamton on Tuesday, Apr. 21.
The 2009 MAAC Tournament will be played over three days from Apr. 24-26 in New Rochelle, N.Y. at Iona College.
